  • ‘Globalization and Societies in Transition – the bioethical issues, challenges and Asia Pacific Bioethics of UNESCO chair’. Prof. Dr. Russel F. D’Souza, Director of Clinical Trials and Bipolar Programme, Northern Psychiatric Research, Melbourne, & Asia Pacific chair of the UNESCO international chair on bioethics. Dr. Russell spoke about how the UNESCO bioethical chairs can educate people and professionals and equip them with the necessary skills to tackle the ethical issues in biology and in research. The SRM University announced the appointment of Dr Russell F D’Souza as the Honorary Professor of Eminence in Bio-Ethics of SRM University.  
  • Teleconference of Unit Heads and Steering Committee members of Asia Pacific Network Bioethics units 29th May 2013
  • The Head of the India nodal centre, Dr P. Thangaraju and the Lead Chair for India participated. An in-depth discussion was conducted regarding the issues regarding introduction of a bio ethics in the regular curriculum of undergraduate medical education.
  • Installation of the Head and the Lead Chair India Nodal Bioethics Centre & Dedication of the Regional offices of the International Bioethics Chair of UNESCO and the Asia Secretariat of the Asia Pacific Chair. 14th Aug 2013.  
  • The Hon’ble Chancellor SRM University,Dr T R Pachamuthu, inaugurated the India Nodal Bioethics unit and dedicated the above offices. He commended the efforts in bringing this laurel to SRM University and assured that the Bioethics Nodal Centre and the Regional offices will be afforded all possible help. Honorary Professorship of Bioethics was conferred on distinguished teachers from abroad and from India.Major General Prof. Dr DatoMohammed Zin Bidin, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, National Defence University of Malaysia and the Chair of Malaysia Bioethics unit, gave the acceptance speech on behalf of all the newly appointed honorary professors.

International Seminar on Bioethics in Medical Education - 14 Oct 2013

The Scientific sessions were inaugurated by the Hon’ble Pro Vice Chancellor (P&D).  Dr. Russell F D'Souza,Chair, Asia Pacific Bioethics Network, UNESCO delivered the Key note address, on ‘Bioethics for Clinicians - Teaching Bioethics in a Clinical setting’. Inauguration of the Nepal unit of the UNESCO International Chair on Bioethics – 23, 24 January 2014 : The lead chair for India attended the above and also gave an invited Guest Lecture on the emerging trends in training the medical students and the practitioners in bioethics. He also presented a new model for teaching bioethics to Medical students. This model is designed to vertically and seamlessly integrates bioethics into the existing undergraduate medical curriculum and is called ‘vitum bioethics’.

International Seminar on bioethics education & Inauguration of the University of Philippines Manila – 30 September 2014: The Head of the India Nodal Bioethics Centre (at SRM University) was the Guest of Honour at the above conference. He delivered the Key Note address in the Inauguration plenary session. He also presented the new model for teaching bioethics to Medical students ‘vitum - bioethics’ to the audience.

The above teaching model, has been published in the journal, Global Bioethical Enquiry - the official journal of the UNESCO International Chair on Bioethics.
